It’s not just about caring for your physical health, but also your mental health and wellbeing. When you feel good mentally, you’re more likely to feel energised, present and able to enjoy daily life. But when our minds are overwhelmed or tired, it can impact everything from mood to motivation. Mental health needs care and consistency, but it doesn’t have to be hard or heavy. Here are four beneficial ways to support your mental wellbeing, gently and sustainably.
1. Make quality sleep and rest a top priority
Sleep and rest are essential to overall well-being. But for those of us who experience insomnia, the phrase “prioritise sleep” can feel like just another pressure. Instead of seeing rest as a task to tick off, we can reframe it as a gift. Something flexible and personal that looks different for each of us.
Some ways to support rest:
- Yoga nidra has been a game-changer in managing my insomnia. Whether I use it for support in the middle of the night or as a rest break the next day, it gives my body and mind space to reset. The knowledge behind this practice is ancient and so relevant today. You can find sessions from 10 minutes to 2 hours on YouTube, whatever suits your needs. Two of my favourite teachers are Ally Boothroyd and Kristyn Rose.
- Listen to calming sleep stories or soothing soundscapes.
- Let go of the pressure to fall asleep and allow space simply to rest.
- Reflect on ideas in Rest Is Resistance by Tricia Hersey, a powerful book about reclaiming rest in a world that glorifies hustle.
Some people find natural supports helpful too. A Delta 8 oil tincture is one option, known for its calming properties, which may help support relaxation and ease into sleep. As with all supplements, consult with a health practitioner to find what’s safe and supportive for you.
Rest doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be kind.
2. Find healthy ways to reduce and manage stress
Some stress is natural, but chronic stress can leave us feeling stuck, anxious or burned out. One of the most empowering things we can do for our mental health is to learn what truly helps us unwind and release pressure.
That might look like:
- Journalling your thoughts
- A brisk walk or gentle jog
- Spending time with someone who understands you
- Creating boundaries around work or screen time
I also highly recommend the book Burnout: The Secret to Solving the Stress Cycle by Emily and Amelia Nagoski. It explains how stress lives in the body, why it’s not enough to just remove the stressor, and offers accessible ways to complete the stress cycle, especially for women who feel emotionally exhausted or overextended.

3. Meditate and do yoga
Mindfulness and movement can both play a big part in mental clarity. Even 10 minutes a day can create real shifts.
I’ve used the Calm app daily for years, and it continues to be one of my most trusted tools. It has a vast library of guided meditations, breathing techniques, sleep stories, soundscapes and support for everything from sleep to anxiety to creativity. It’s one of those resources I come back to again and again.
Movement-wise, even the gentlest stretches can help regulate the nervous system. Consider integrating a simple yoga practice that’s more about connection than performance. Yoga can meet you where you are, both physically and emotionally.
4. Spend time in nature
Nature is a natural regulator. It invites us to slow down, breathe more deeply and feel rooted again.
Try:
- Sitting quietly in your garden with a cup of tea
- Going for a mindful walk and noticing five things you can see, hear or feel
- Getting your hands into the soil or tending to plants
Time in the natural world helps reduce stress and reconnects us with rhythms that are calming and sustainable. This article explores the mental health benefits of time in nature, which is a core part of many wellness traditions across the globe.
Putting it all together
Supporting your mental health isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about gently tuning in to what you need and allowing that to be valid. Whether that’s five minutes of calm breathing, a tincture before bed or a long walk among trees, each small step is a win.
