When you have a home, whether bought or rented, it can be a great time to fill it all up with your things, and make the home your own. But after a while of living in one place at the same time, then you might find that your wardrobes and cupboards are overflowing, and there is quite a lot of junk piling up. And if you don’t take some responsibility for it, then it really can pile up, and there will be a lot of stuff, just scattered around. It can just become part of your home, and for you living there all of the time, it might all start to blend in. But if you feel like the stuff in your home is constantly taking up your time and bothering your mind, then it can be a good idea to start doing something about it.
Have you heard of the Marie Kondo method of decluttering the home? It can be a great place to start if you want to clear out your home and create more of a minimalist lifestyle. Some things you might not want to just throw away forever, which is where a self storage company comes in. But if you need things out of sight or decluttered, then here are a few quick tips and tricks to help.
Declutter Things Before You Organise
If you simply try to get the house looking more orderly and organised, then you will be simply moving things to start with, and that will only solve a problem for a small amount of time. Things will quite easily start to get messy again. So if you declutter first, and then organise, then you are organising and tidying the things in your home that you want to be there, and that will bring you joy, a Kondo often talks about.
Don’t Go Room by Room
It can be easy, and make a lot of sense to declutter your home by going from room to room. But you can end up just moving things from room to room if you’re not too careful about it. For example, if you are sorting your child’s wardrobe, will you just move things out of their room that no longer fits them, but you won’t throw them away, so they just get moved to a different room. Instead, if you go through your home category by category, then you can declutter all clothes at once, or all books at once, rather than just moving things from room to room.
Take Photos
If you take photos before you start this journey, then they shouldn’t be used to make you feel bad; it needs to be a motivator to keep you going. It can be something that can be discouraging when you don’t see results right away, but using the photos, you will see that you actually have come quite far and done a lot, even when it might not feel like it. So take photos and do before and after shots, and it will be such a motivator.
I am personally a big fan of this method of decluttering and tidying, you can see how I have implemented this system in my own home here: KonMari Method
