KITCHEN: The vision (Pinspiration & Plan)

I’ve now been planning this kitchen refurb for coming up to 5 years! Certain thoughts and plans and ideas have changed along the way, but this is the year, the year it is going to happen and this I am determined of 🙂

So high time to lay out the current set of plans so that you guys can see and as ever I can document them too.

I always did love the light grey shaker kitchen (Bodbyn) which IKEA offer, but in the past year my new addiction in TV land has been Pretty Little Liars, Spencer (character pictured here) is a real style inspiration with both clothes and her parents house. When I saw this kitchen I fell in love with the black shaker units (Laxarby) against the wooden worktops (which IKEA offer the best value in solid tops). Classic, Scandinavian, timeless design, I knew it was for me and as a result changed my chosen units. I’m so excited to see the result!

 

In terms of wall tiles, classic and timeless all the way is the way to go. I’m so happy with how my brick tiles with grey grout went in my bathroom refurb, and I’ve got 2.5 boxes left too, so I will be using these again for our kitchen splashbacks, and will top them up with some additional boxes. I got the original ones from Topps Tiles on the Tesco Clubcard scheme so they were actually free of charge, I’d recommend this 100% as it wonderful to have one cost which you don’t have to worry about 🙂

 

I loved this two-tone kitchen from the moment I saw it. Whilst we’re using quite different colours and in the first instance were lead down this road due to getting a donated second hand kitchen from my Mum’s cousin, of which we could use the wall cupboard and upcycle but not the base units as kitchens in the 70s didn’t have adjustable feet, I now wouldn’t have it any other way – I love the idea of two-tone and it was this image which made me realise it. 🙂

 

Of course the lovely thing about upcycling is that you can customise. I love this deep teal/turquoise in this image and equally its contrast with the white on the outside, the idea makes your cupboard unique and bespoke. I love that and went on to use the idea when upcycling the wall cabinets which we inherited from my Mum’s cousin. You can read all about how I did this here.

 

I love quarry tiles, they are good value, classic in design and have been in fashion since Victorian times. The actual tiles which I ended up going for were from www.wallsandfloors.co.uk  because they were the best value online. And I must say I was very happy with the quality, service and delivery provided. I originally came to this idea after visit a local salvage yard and seeing lots of reclaimed ones piled up but I didn’t go for this option in the end as unfortunately it was double the price of new. I also love that quarry tiles like these were very popular in the 1950s when our house was built and so I feel like it is an exercise in putting the character back in. I have gone for grey grout again as this is so much less maintenance and I actually think it looks nicer too and we have also laid the tiles in a diamond formation with a square border for a professional and expensive look.
