We’ve all felt the cold sweeping in outside, and with the country plunged into darkness by 4.30pm, you can bet that winter is here! Not only does the cold mean the early nights, the lack of squirrels outside and the introduction of twinkly lights in the streets, but it means that we need to get warmer. We’ll see it on the outside that the weather is changing, but we’re sure going to feel it inside the house if we’re not careful.
When the seasons change, we need to consider how we can make our homes warmer. The good news is that this seasonal shift doesn’t have to badly affect us. No one should be curled up inside the house and away from the cold, only to be shivering while the world goes by. The best thing that you can do, though, is look at how you can make some warming changes to your home. Adding extra heating oil tanks just makes sense for the season, but what you should be doing is figuring out how to make yourself feel warmer. So, let’s check out some of the best things that you can do for a comfortable winter season.
- Look At Your Lighting. Sometimes, warmth is more than just hot air blowing on you. It’s the ambient warm lighting you’ve added to each room of the house to make it look warmer and cosier. You just don’t get as much natural light in the winter, so you have to create your own. If you deal with SAD (seasonal affective disorder), then you’re going to need to look at some SAD lamps that will help with the symptoms. The right combination of lights will change the way that your home feels – and that’s the best thing that you can hope for when you’re dealing with feeling cold inside!
- Layers, Everyone Loves Layers. Throws over the sofas and an extra one on the bed add warmth to you wherever you are. Extra layers keep the heat in around you, and the softness of the blankets will make you feel instantly relaxed and cosy. When your body is relaxed, you can stop shivering as much! Choose throws with a fleece underside to trap the heat and add to your comfort.
- More Pillows. Okay, so they’re not as warm as blankets, but accent pillows are a lovely addition to the home in the winter months, and with Christmas around the corner festive throw pillows are going to make the room stand out. Look for giant plush pillows and floor pillows, too, for added comfort and seating at the same time.
- Rugs Trap Heat. Fluffy rugs will trap the heat in your home. The floor – especially if you have wooden or laminate flooring – is somewhere that the heat will escape. Plus, no one wants to feel cold on the floor first thing in the morning. Add a layer of rugs on your flooring, and even if your flooring is carpet, choose rugs anyway!
